About The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS

Introduction

The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS is an auditioned chamber choir based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The choir is helmed jointly by Wayne Gilpin, Conductor; Andrew Gilpin, Accompanist; and Carol Gilpin, Alto.

The SINGERS present an annual series of public concerts and perform on request at social and charitable functions.

Since the inception of the choir in 1998, its approach has been to focus mainly on shorter works, usually presenting Christian-focused concerts for the Christmas and Easter seasons, with an evening of secular repertoire in May or June.

Professional guest artists have been a staple of the SINGERS' concerts from the very beginning. These musicians bring their considerable talents to accompanying the choir, as well as performing pieces on their own. This approach treats the audience to a more varied sonic palette, and provides the SINGERS with an occasional break during performance.

Above all, The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS strives to bring together the best music and the most skilled musicians to produce moving and memorable performances.

Graphic Design by Carol Gilpin & Andrew Gilpin

Another important feature of each Wayne Gilpin SINGERS concert is graphic design. In addition to their efforts in preparing the music, Andrew and Carol work hard to design posters and programmes that are as appealing and exciting as the music they feature.

The Concerts page of this website showcases a wide variety of the concert posters Carol and Andrew have designed over the years. We invite you to enjoy their creative and colourful designs as you browse our past performances.

Andrew Gilpin, Accompanist

Andrew Gilpin, born in Edmonton in 1974, is completely self-taught at the piano. In 1999 Andrew released a CD entitled Multiplicity which includes jazz, classical, vocal and instrumental selections, and features his major work for choir and soprano soloist, Gloria. Andrew’s latest recording is Christmas Ragtime, a unique collection of original ragtime pieces based on popular Christmas carols and songs. Recently Andrew led his jazz ensemble in accompanying the Achill Choral Society’s performance of Will Todd’s Mass in Blue in Colgan, Ontario, and also their performance of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia in Caledon, Ontario.

Background (1997)

Conductor Wayne Gilpin began working in the Kitchener-Waterloo area in the fall of 1997 as Artistic Director of Menno Singers and the Mennonite Mass Choir. Despite a very well received Menno Singers concert in November, and three extremely successful performances of Handel's Messiah in December of 1997, Menno Singers abruptly terminated their association with Mr. Gilpin. Many singers from the Mass Choir wanted to continue singing with Mr. Gilpin, and encouraged him to continue his musical activities in the area.

How We Began (1998)

The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS was organized in January of 1998 and started rehearsals that month, preparing for their first concert in the spring. Among the choristers who formed that first version of the SINGERS were some former students of Mr. Gilpin's (he had spent several years in the early 1970's as a high school teacher in Elmira, a town north of Waterloo).

A mass choir, The Celebration Chorale, was also formed at the same time. The first concert for both choirs was A Celebration in Song, which also featured Mr. Gilpin's Toronto-based chamber choir, Cantilena. This concert was recorded live and released as a double-CD set.

Luther Village on the Park (1998)

In the fall of 1998, the Wayne Gilpin SINGERS sang at the Service of Celebration and Dedication for Luther Village on the Park (LVP), a retirement community in Waterloo. Thus began the choir's long association with LVP, which continues to this day. The SINGERS still rehearse in the chapel at LVP, and perform several concerts annually for the residents.

Our First Full Season (1998-1999)

The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS' first season began with two performances of Handel's Messiah in December, which featured The Celebration Chorale as well as Cantilena. The SINGERS also performed a Christmas concert that year, Silent Night, Holy Night.

In March, the SINGERS, along with the Lutheran High School East Choir of Harper Woods, Michigan, presented a fundraising concert. Proceeds from this concert helped bring a family from the Chernobyl area to Elmira for the summer.

In March of 1999, the SINGERS joined forces with Cantilena and soprano Wendy Humphreys to present the World Premiere of "Gloria" by Andrew Gilpin. In our final concert of the 1998-1999 season the SINGERS were joined once again by The Celebration Chorale and Cantilena for The Power and the Glory!

In May of 1999, Elmira District Secondary School, where Mr. Gilpin taught music in the 1970's, held its 60th Reunion Anniversary Service. The SINGERS sang at this reunion, their final performance of the season.

Our Second Season (1999-2000)

In 1999 the Wayne Gilpin SINGERS were invited to participate in Zion United Church's 160th Anniversary Gala Concert. In honour of the occasion, Zion United commissioned our accompanist, Andrew Gilpin, to compose an Anniversary Anthem. The anthem was entitled "Peace", setting to music a poem by Henry Vaughan.

The SINGERS' fall concert, And the Night Shall be Filled with Music, featured guest clarinetist Peter Stoll, with whom Andrew Gilpin formed the duo "Ebony & Ivory". A performance of Handel's Messiah followed in December, again with the participation of The Celebration Chorale and Cantilena.

The choir returned in March with Sing a New Song!, joined by guest soloist Measha Brueggergosman. Finally, in May of 2000, the SINGERS, combined with Cantilena and The Celebration Chorale, presented Songs of the People, a showcase of folk songs from around the world.

The Early 2000's

Kicking off the SINGERS' third season was Songs from Home and Away, a concert which included Andrew Gilpin's duo "Ebony & Ivory". The duo also performed with the choir in their spring concert, Show Tunes!

For their 2001-2002 season the SINGERS expanded to three concerts. The first, Go, Tell It On The Mountain!, was a Christmas concert and carol sing, followed by Because He Lives!, a performance which added a jazz quartet (saxophone, piano, bass, and drums) to the mix for the first time in the choir's history.

In the spring of 2002 the SINGERS presented a British Music Hall, with repertoire including "Wandering the King's Highway", "There'll Always Be an England", and even some P.D.Q. Bach!

The choir's Christmas performance was Sing Noel!, which featured well-known Toronto flutist Les Allt as guest artist. Then in April's Behold The Lamb the SINGERS were joined by David Veilleux, Andrew's new musical partner in his "Ebony & Ivory" duo. The final concert in the SINGERS' 2002-2003 season was Radio Days, a tribute to the Golden Age of Radio.

The Mid-2000's

In the fall of 2003, the choir performed Christmas Faith and Christmas Fun, a mix of sacred and secular Christmas music. This repertoire was recorded as "Sing Gloria!", the SINGERS' second CD release.

Amazing Grace followed in the spring, with guest jazz quartet. June brought Radio Days 2, the sequel to 2003's Radio Days, with the choir revisiting the Golden Age of Radio.

The SINGERS' 2004 Christmas concert was Celebrate the Joy!, followed next April by Home in that Rock. The repertoire from this spring concert was recorded at The Stone Church in Toronto, Ontario, and released as the SINGERS' third CD. Rounding out their 2004-2005 season was Music from the Movies, a tribute to decades of hits from Hollywood.

Jazz Messiah - The Beginning

In December of 2005, for their concert entitled Sing a Song of Christmas, the Wayne Gilpin SINGERS introduced something brand new: jazz stylings based on Handel's Messiah!

Andrew Gilpin, the choir's accompanist, arranged the "Overture", "For unto us a child is born", and "Behold the Lamb of God" for jazz quartet. These instrumentals were interspersed with the traditional choruses "And the glory", "He trusted in God", an arrangement of the "Hallelujah" chorus from the recording "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration", as well as "Every Valley", a moving anthem by Patti Drennan inspired by the same biblical passage as Messiah's "Ev'ry valley shall be exalted".

This performance marked the beginning of the "Jazz Messiah", a Wayne Gilpin SINGERS tradition that continues to this day.

The Mid-2000's - Part 2

The concert Gloria in April of 2006 featured a reprise of Andrew Gilpin's "Gloria", this time with soprano soloist Sheila Dietrich.

The choir's final concert of the 2005-2006 was a tribute to the '50s and '60s, Forever Doo-Wop. In addition to "My Guy", "Rock Around the Clock", and many other great songs from that period, the performance featured some comedy sketches (as you can see in the nearby photo!)

Billed as the "Jazz Messiah" for the first time, Andrew's unique arrangements of Handel's Messiah were included in the choir's December 2006 concert, Hallelujah! A new arrangement was added this year, the first one in the "Jazz Messiah" to combine jazz quartet with choir, "His yoke is easy".

An inspirational concert, Hosanna!, followed in the spring, with That's Entertainment rounding out the choir's ninth season. This collection of classic songs from stage and screen featured soprano Barbara Mantini, a member of the well-known Canadian trio The Mantini Sisters.

The Choir's 10th Season

"Jazz Messiah" was performed for the third time in the SINGERS' Christmas 2007 concert, Great is our Joy!. This year, composer/arranger Andrew Gilpin added two new arrangements: "All we like sheep have gone astray", with the jazz quartet and choir joining forces, and a moving adaptation of "I know that my redeemer liveth" for soprano saxophone and piano.

The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS' 10th Anniversary Concert took place in March, 2008, and included favourites from the past 10 years. As the choir had already performed several hundred pieces during its existence, it was difficult to choose only 14!

The only way to describe the SINGERS' final concert in their 10th season is "fun!" Good Morning Starshine had the choir singing songs from the musical "Hair", Beatles hits, "Y.M.C.A.", "Da Doo Ron Ron", and many more. All that great music, plus the visual treat of seeing the SINGERS dressed in their 1960s fashion, made this evening an audience favourite.

The Later 2000s

For the choir's 4th annual "Jazz Messiah", Andrew Gilpin composed a brand-new piece, "And Then the Glory". The text is based on a modern translation of Isaiah chapter 40, and the new piece took the place of "And the glory of the Lord" from the original Messiah.

Andrew also wrote a brooding arrangement of "For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth" for the occasion, and it became an integral part of the "Jazz Messiah"

How Great Thou Art took place in March of 2009, and included many hymns, spirituals, and contemporary Christian songs. Finishing out the season was Medley of Musicals, a showcase of music from modern and classic musical theatre.

In December of 2009 the SINGERS presented When a Child is Born. Once again composer/arranger Andrew Gilpin added to his "Jazz Messiah", this time adapting "O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion". Originally written for alto soloist and choir, Mr. Gilpin's version was for choir, piano, and string bass.

The SINGERS' 2009-2010 season continued with Amazing Grace, an inspirational selection of Christian songs, and finally We are the Champions, an evening of songs from the 1970s featuring the music of Queen and The Village People, among others.

A New Decade (2010-2012)

Star of Glory featured the choir's 6th annual "Jazz Messiah", and included guest artists Bells of Westminster, a church-based handbell group. In February, the SINGERS took part in A Box of Delights, a combined concert with The Stratford Trio celebrating Valentine's Day. How Sweet the Sound, a concert of inspirational songs and hymns, followed in April.

Unfortunately, because of illness, a planned June concert entitled "A Place to Stand" had to be postponed until the following season.

The SINGERS regrouped over the summer, gathered again in the fall to prepare for their Christmas concert, Love Came Down at Christmas, which featured the 7th annual "Jazz Messiah". An Easter performance was held in March 2012, Lamb of God, followed by the long-awaited musical celebration of Canada, A Place to Stand.

Composer/arranger and choir accompanist Andrew Gilpin pulled out all the stops for this concert, arranging two lengthy medleys of distinctly Canadian music for the choir, and even composing a new ragtime piece for guest violinist Andrea Weber Steckly.

Rededication (2012-2013)

In the summer of 2012, at the invitation of longtime choir member Phil Cochrane, members of the SINGERS took part in his and his wife Suzie's rededication service. The service was held in the Owen Sound area, where Phil was living at the time, and from where he still commutes a full two hours to rehearse with the choir!

The SINGERS' 2012-2013 season began with Can You Hear the Christmas Bells?, a Christmas performance which included once again the Bells of Westminster. The evening also featured the choir's 8th annual "Jazz Messiah". This concert was reprised the next day at Westminster United Church in Orangeville, Ontario, where conductor Wayne Gilpin was at that time Minister of Music.

The Road to Victory took place in April 2013. The concert was named after Andrew Gilpin's rousing anthem, and also included several of Andrew's instrumental arrangements of hymns and gospel songs. This performance was also toured to Westminster United Church.

Turning once more to the rich repertoire of music from American entertainment, the SINGERS performed Screen Gems in June of 2013, completing their 15th season in style.

First United Church (2013-2014)

Phil Cochrane, a member of the Wayne Gilpin SINGERS since 1998, moved to the Owen Sound, Ontario area in 2010, joining the choir at First United Church. Phil took a leave of absence from the SINGERS, but eventually rejoined the choir.

Thanks to Phil's association with First United, the SINGERS were able to go on tour to Owen Sound in the fall of 2013, performing a fundraising concert for OSHaRE (Owen Sound Hunger and Relief Effort), and also taking part in a Sunday service at the church.

The choir's 2013-2014 season began with A Christmas Blessing, which featured their now-traditional "Jazz Messiah". During that Christmas season the SINGERS also shared their music with the residents of Chateau Gardens, a long term care residence located in Elmira, Ontario.

An evening of spirituals, gospel favourites and inspirational songs, You Raise Me Up, followed in the spring of 2014. The SINGERS capped their season with Love is in the Air, a celebration of life and love.

Seventeenth Season (2014-2015)

The fall of 2014 brought the SINGERS back to First United Church in Owen Sound on two occasions: first, the choir participated in a Sunday Service at the church in October; then, at the end of November, the SINGERS brought their "Jazz Messiah" to First United!

This concert was particularly notable, as it featured the world premiere of Andrew Gilpin's new composition, with lyrics by famous Canadian poet Robert Service, "The Passing of the Year".

The SINGERS performed this same Jazz Messiah concert in Kitchener in December as the first concert in their regular season.

Second in the 2014-2015 season was Ride On, King Jesus, featuring sacred songs and hymns. In June, the SINGERS presented Oh, Freedom, a celebration of the African-American spiritual.

Eighteenth Season (2015-2016)

On November 1, 2015 the SINGERS travelled to First United Church in Owen Sound for two reasons: In the morning they participated in a Sunday service celebrating the 170th anniversary of First United; and in the afternoon the choir reprised their June concert, Oh, Freedom. Not only did the SINGERS make the trip, but they brought along four guest artists as well: Andrea Weber Steckly, violin; Denis Rondeau, bass; Wilson Laurencin, drums; and David Puttock, narrator.

To begin their regular concert season, the choir performed a concert of contemporary Christmas classics, which also included their "Jazz Messiah". Songs of the Promise followed in April, featuring Southern Gospel songs and hymns.

The choir switched gears for their final concert, The Great American Musical, performing selections from South Pacific, Oklahoma, Sister Act, Hairspray, Kiss Me Kate, Carousel, and The Sound of Music.

The trumpet shall sound!

The Trumpet Shall Sound (2016-2017)

The SINGERS kicked off their nineteenth concert season with Adore!, which included their popular "Jazz Messiah", new arrangements of favourite carols, and a ragtime version of "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear".

This year saw two additions to the "Jazz Messiah": "All they that see him laugh him to scorn", with soprano saxophone standing in for the original tenor soloist; and "He trusted in God", one of the most dramatic choruses from "Messiah", newly arranged for choir and jazz piano trio.

For the first time in the choir's history, in celebration of the Easter season, the SINGERS were joined by a trumpet soloist! Guest artist Robert Venables was featured in some pieces with the choir, and also raised the roof with selections from Claude Bolling's notoriously difficult "Toot Suite", accompanied by Andrew Gilpin and his jazz piano trio.

The concert described above was entitled "Thine is the Glory", and was performed at St. Jerome's University in Waterloo, St. John the Evangelist Church in Kitchener, and First United Church in Owen Sound.

For the Kitchener performance, guest artist Bob Brough stood in for Robert Venables, taking on the Herculean task of performing Bolling's "Toot Suite", originally written for trumpet, on saxophone!

Finally, the SINGERS celebrated Canada's 150th birthday in song with O Canada! Beginning with Canada's stirring national anthem, the concert included songs from musical theatre, folk songs, jazz standards, instrumental hits, and even a brand-new piece, "Andrea's Tango", composed especially for the occasion.

Twentieth Season (2017-2018)

Once again, the SINGERS began their season with a trip up to Owen Sound, Ontario, joining the congregation of First United Church for a Sunday service.

Swing Down, Angels followed in December, marking the SINGERS' 13th annual performance of their unique "Jazz Messiah". The concert also included well-known Christmas carols, as well as a reprise of "The Passing of the Year", with Robert Service's thoughtful and moving words set to music by Andrew Gilpin.

For their spring offering the SINGERS presented Peace Like a River, songs of faith and inspiration in concert. The audience heard many familiar hymns and contemporary Christian songs.

Finishing off the season was a musical tribute to the '50s, '60s, '70s, & '80s, Blast from the Past. The SINGERS started in the '50s with hits such as "Rock Around the Clock" and "Sh-Boom", travelled through the '60s and '70s with "Y.M.C.A." and a tribute to Queen, among others, and ended the show with "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing".

Twenty-First Season (2018-2019)

This season began with our annual trip to First United Church in Owen Sound, joining the church's Sunday Service in November.

For Christmas the SINGERS continued another annual tradition, presenting their 14th "Jazz Messiah". O holy night! also featured arrangements of well-known carols and newer seasonal songs.

In March of 2019 the SINGERS' concert In the Garden told the Easter story in song, performing "Amazing Grace", "Mary, Did You Know?", "It Is Well With My Soul", and many other Christian classics.

The 2018-2019 season concluded with Tribute to Musicals, with the SINGERS performing selections from such musical theatre shows including "The Phantom of the Opera", "Mamma Mia", and "The Lion King".

COVID-19 Pandemic Begins

Twenty-Second Season (2019-2020)

In November of 2019, the SINGERS were happy to join First United Church for their Sunday service. The choir loves to share their music, and is always appreciative of First United's warm welcome and hospitality.

Never been a Night like This!, heard in December, included the SINGERS' 15th annual "Jazz Messiah", was notable for including "The Angel Gabriel", a 19th-century Basque carol, and Andrew Gilpin's touching arrangement of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".

Little suspecting what was to come, the choir began rehearsing for their March concert, For the Beauty of the Earth. Subtitled "Celebrating the Divine in song", this concert was to include Howard Goodall's setting of "The Lord is My Shepherd" (also known as the theme for the popular BBC comedy "The Vicar of Dibley"); two different anthems based on Charles Wesley's well-known hymn text "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"; and a high-energy version of "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" (with a melody originally composed by Ludwig van Beethoven).

And then came March 11, 2020, when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic. This was soon followed in Ontario by the closure of schools, shortages of some items in supermarkets, and the general feeling that the situation was extremely serious.

The SINGERS moved quickly to cancel their upcoming rehearsals, then their March concert, and eventually the rest of their season. Those decisions were made for the safety of singers and audience alike, as it became clear that gathering people together posed a public health risk.

As of this writing (November 2020) the activities of The Wayne Gilpin SINGERS are still suspended. Like so many others around the world, we are anxiously waiting to see what happens. Will there be a vaccine? If not, will there be a treatment that renders COVID-19 less of a threat? If not, can we find another way to co-exist with this new disease?

Whatever happens, the SINGERS are looking forward to resuming their musical activities and sharing more of their music with audiences. Stay tuned!
